Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feet, which correspond to every organ, gland and part of the body.
Through application of pressure on these reflexes, Reflexology reduces stress and tension, improves circulation and helps to promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.
In reflexology we do not treat one element. We treat the entire body/system, not just the symptom or issue you may be having. The body is a whole unit and every system is linked to another. By working on the whole body, it will help the symptom or issue you are having.
Reflexology is ideal if there is pain or tenderness in other parts of your body that can’t be worked directly on (such as open wounds, bone breaks, sprains, or any kind of damage or chronic pain) A session on the hands or feet is a whole body session, therefore the whole body will get the benefit from a hand or foot session, without touching a specific part of the body.
Reflexology stimulates and positively affects all the major organ systems in the body – The Nervous System, Endocrine System, Digestive System, Lymphatic System, Respiratory System, Circulatory System, Muscular, /Skeletal System, Integumentary System, Urinary System and the Reproductive System.
What are the Benefits?
A reflexology session is very relaxing. It reduces stress. It enhances the body's own natural healing functions and it puts the client in the parasympathetic state - where we rest, digest and repair - where the body heals itself. Reflexology promotes that relaxed state, and the stimulus that enhances the body's own natural healing functions.
Most recipients of a Reflexology treatment experience reduced pain, a good night’s sleep, and often relief from constipation within the first 24 hours. The process continues working well after the session on deeper levels.
What does a session look like?
For the first reflexology treatment with a client, I have the client complete a detailed medical history form, and then before the initial session, we talk in deeper detail about the medical history.
The client will come in with freshly clean hands or feet, free from any skin or nail infections or conditions, and they will sit in a reclining chair or lay face up on a massage table, with only the hands or feet exposed.
A session begins with some warm-ups and stretching of the hand/foot done by the reflexologist, while the client relaxes and enjoys the treatment. Then pressure is applied to numerous and very specific points on the hands or feet. Expect to notice some sensitive places, that is normal. At the end of the session the reflexologist will let the client relax for a few minutes, will go wash up, and return to discuss the session further.
